MILIES

Milies is one of the most beautiful and traditional villages of Pelion. It is 28 kilometers from Volos and is built at 400 meters altitude.

Through the rich olive groves and the old plane trees, the gorgeous mansions of Milies, impressive witnesses of the history of the village. You can reach Milies by your own car or with public transfer KTEL from Volos!

The famous among artists and intellectuals village Milies is the starting point of the legendary steam train of Pelion, the so-called “Moutzouris” (i.e. smudgy) extending up to Ano Lechonia, Pilion, close to the city of Volos. Its rail track runs along a route of natural beauty connecting the centre of Volos to the fertile district of Western Pelion.

In the winter, when the train stops operating, walk along its rail track and take pictures of the iron bridge constructed by Evaristo de Chirico, the chief engineer and mastermind of the Pilio steam train and father of the Italian surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico. Take the path heading towards Vyzitsa, Pelion and enjoy the panoramic view of the Pagasetic Gulf. It is also worth paying a visit to the Church of “Pamegiston Taxiarchon”, typical of the traditional Pilion architecture with post-Byzantine icons of artistic and historical significance.

In Milies, you can visit the Pelion crafts museum and the local library-museum, though most people come here to have lunch in the tavernas at the old railway station or on the main square.

During the summer season you can take a ride on the old train whistling along the narrow gauge railway line (it takes you past breathtaking scenery); if you come another time, go for a great walk along the tracks. Milies is a year-round destination.
